Glamping in the Sahara, Morocco: What It Is and What a Night Is Really Like
Glamping is camping that leaves out the compromise. It is the same wild edge of the Sahara, but with a real bed, warm linen and a lantern to read by when the sun goes down. Here is what it means in the Moroccan desert, what a night looks like, and how to plan yours near Zagora.
Camping, upgraded
The idea is simple: keep everything that makes you feel close to the land, and remove everything that makes you uncomfortable. A sturdy tent instead of a flapping one. A proper mattress instead of a roll mat. A hot meal and a table laid for dinner at the end of the day. You still hear the desert at night, still wake to the first light on the dune. You just do it, and sleep well.
Glamping vs camping vs a basic desert camp
| Basic bivouac | Glamping | |
|---|---|---|
| Bed | Simple mattress | Proper bed, soft linen |
| Tent | Basic, often shared | Sturdy private tent with rugs and lamps |
| Bathroom | Often shared | Private bathroom in every tent |
| Dinner | Simple and warm | Table laid, Moroccan cooking from our garden |
| Evening | Fire and tea | Bonfire, Berber music and stargazing |
| Best for | Budget travellers | Couples, families and first-time desert guests |
Facilities differ widely between camps, so ask exactly what is included before you book. In particular, ask about bathrooms, heating in winter and where you can charge your phone, because many desert tents have no power sockets.
Glamping in the Sahara at Taragalte
At Taragalte we give every tent the same care we give the food we cook: woven rugs on the sand, soft bed linen, brass lamps glowing against the canvas, and a private corner of the desert around each one. Days are spent on camelback or walking the dunes. Nights are spent around a bonfire with Berber music, then under a sky so clear the Milky Way reads like a road.
It is the best of both worlds: the depth and stillness of the deep desert, with the comfort to enjoy them fully. That, for us, is what glamping means.
A night in a Sahara glamping tent
- Late afternoon. Arrive, settle into your tent, and ride out on camelback as the light turns gold.
- Sunset. Watch the dunes change colour from orange to deep rose. This is the best hour for photographs.
- Evening. A Moroccan dinner, prepared with vegetables from our organic garden. For a special occasion, ask about our private candlelit dinner in the dunes, from €80 per couple.
- Night. Bonfire, drumming and Berber music, then the stars. The temperature drops quickly after sunset, so keep a warm layer to hand.
- Sunrise. Wake to the first light on the sand, with breakfast waiting.
Best time for Sahara glamping
October to April is the most comfortable period, with warm days and cool, clear nights. Winter nights can approach freezing from December to February, so bring warm layers or ask us what is provided (Extra blankets, Heating in the tent, Hot water bottles, Nothing extra). Avoid June to August, when the Drâa Valley regularly reaches 40 to 45°C.
Stargazing tip: the Milky Way is visible to the naked eye on clear nights, but the moon matters. Choose dates around the new moon for the darkest sky. Autumn and winter nights have the clearest air.
What to pack
- Warm layers, as the desert gets cold quickly after dark
- A scarf or chèche, sunglasses and sunscreen
- Closed shoes and a torch or headlamp
- A portable charger for your phone
- A socket in every tent
- A camera
