Drâa Valley Road Trip: From Ouarzazate to Zagora & M’hamid

← Back to Blog

Following an ancient caravan route through palm groves, kasbahs and desert, the Drâa Valley is one of Morocco’s most beautiful drives. This Drâa Valley road trip takes you from Ouarzazate south to Zagora and on to M’hamid, the gateway to the Sahara. Here is how to plan it.

The Drâa Valley Route at a Glance

The classic Drâa Valley road trip runs along the N9 from Ouarzazate to Zagora (about 165 km) and then south to M’hamid el Ghizlane (a further 90–100 km). Along the way the road follows the Drâa River through a near-continuous oasis of date palms, framed by red mountains and dotted with mud-brick villages. It is a journey from the High Atlas foothills to the edge of the Sahara.

Best Stops on a Drâa Valley Road Trip

1. Agdz & the Kasbahs

The first major town south of Ouarzazate, Agdz is the gateway to the valley, surrounded by palm groves and historic kasbahs such as Kasbah Tamnougalt — a wonderful first stop to stretch your legs.

2. Tamegroute

South of Zagora, Tamegroute is famous for its green pottery and its centuries-old Quranic library, a treasure trove of ancient manuscripts and one of the cultural highlights of the Drâa.

3. Zagora

Zagora is the valley’s main hub and the classic base for desert adventures. Don’t miss the famous “Tombouctou 52 Jours” sign. See our guide to the best things to do in Zagora.

4. Tinfou & the First Dunes

Just beyond Zagora, the small dunes of Tinfou give a first taste of the Sahara before you continue south toward the big sands.

5. M’hamid el Ghizlane

The road ends at M’hamid, the last village before the open desert and the launch point for the dunes of Erg Chigaga. Read more in our guide to M’hamid, gateway to the Sahara.

6. Erg Chigaga

Beyond M’hamid lie the magnificent dunes of Erg Chigaga. The best way to reach them is by 4×4 or, even better, on an Erg Chigaga camel trek with an overnight desert camp.

How Long Do You Need?

You can drive from Ouarzazate to M’hamid in a day, but the Drâa Valley rewards a slower pace. We recommend 2 to 4 days to enjoy the kasbahs, Tamegroute, Zagora and an overnight in the Sahara near M’hamid.

Driving Tips for the Drâa Valley

  • Fill up with fuel in Ouarzazate and Zagora — stations are sparse further south.
  • Carry water, snacks and cash, as facilities thin out toward M’hamid.
  • Drive in daylight; watch for livestock and occasional sand on the road.
  • A regular car is fine to M’hamid, but you need a 4×4 (or a transfer) to reach Erg Chigaga.

Best Time for the Trip

The ideal season is October to April, with comfortable daytime temperatures. Summer is intensely hot in the valley and the Sahara, so spring and autumn are best.
